This season at the Metropolitan Opera, Guanqun Yu will perform both the roles of Micaëla in Bizet’s Carmen and Donna Anna in Mozart’s Don Giovanni. She begins by starring in Sir Richard Eyre’s powerful production of Carmen, a Met favorite since its 2009 premiere. She returns in April 2019 to star as Donna Anna in Michael Grandage’s production of Don Giovanni.

Performances of Carmen are October 30, November 3, 6, 10 & 15. Omer Meir Wellber conducts the Metropolitan Opera Chorus and Orchestra plus a riveting roster of singers including Clémentine Margaine as the title role, Yonghoon Lee as Don José, Kyle Ketelsen as Escamillo, Richard Bernstein as Zuniga, Sydney Mancasola as Frasquita, and Sarah Mesko as Mercédès.

Guanqun Yu made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in 2012, jumping in for an ailing colleague as Leonora in Sir David McVicar’s production of Verdi’s Il Trovatore. Opera News applauded her portrayal of the iconic Verdi heroine saying:

“Yu, a native of Shandong, China, who won second prize last June in the Operalia competition, revealed a flexible, beautifully marbled soprano that trembled with emotion, along with a naturalistic acting style that was fully integrated into her singing. She turned the soaring phrases of “Tacea la notte placida” into a luscious treat, pouring her heart out about the man she loves and letting us know right out of the gate that the action would be based on authentically grand passion.” (Opera News)
