'Otello' at the Staatsoper Hamburg

Guanqun Yu begins her 2019/20 season at the Staatsoper Hamburg starring as Desdemona in Calixto Bieito’s powerful production of Verdi’s Otello. Over the summer, Ms. Yu sang her signature role of Desdemona at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, garnering critical praise from Bachtrack:

“Desdemona was Guanqun Yu, whose lyric soprano was very well suited to the unhappy wife. She had good technique and a remarkable smooth legato, which served her well in the willow song, and the following Ave Maria.”

Performances of Otello take place on October 3, 6, 11 & 15, Paolo Carignani conducts the Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Hamburg and Chor der Hamburgischen Staatsoper. The sparkling cast will include Marco Berti as the title role, Marco Vratogna as Iago, Nadezhda Karyazina as Emilia, and Oleksiy Palchykov as Cassio. Later this season, Ms. Yu will return to the Opernhaus Zürich to sing Desdemona in a production by Graham Vick.
